What’s an Ophthalmologist?

Ophthalmologists provide comprehensive eye care. Ophthalmologists diagnose, treat and perform surgery to correct vision problems.

Ophthalmologists usually work in offices equipped with the necessary equipment to perform examinations and tests. They may also work in hospitals or medical facilities to perform more complex imaging and exploratory procedures.

Ophthalmologists diagnose eye diseases and treat them.

Ophthalmologists (MDs or DOs), are doctors of medicine who specialize in the diagnosis, prevention and treatment of eye injuries and conditions. Ophthalmologists treat their patients' eye problems with medications, laser treatments, and surgical interventions.

Ophthalmologists are required to complete four years in medical school, followed by a four-to-seven year residency where they learn how to treat eye disorders. They must also pass the United States Medical Licensing Examination.

They are specialists in treating a variety of eye conditions including cataracts, macular degeneration, and glaucoma. They can also prescribe eyeglasses, contact lenses, and give advice on vision loss prevention.

If you suspect that you have an eye condition, consult an ophthalmologist as soon as possible to diagnose the disease in its earliest stages. This could save your vision and prevent irreparable damage. They are trained professionals who can detect disease before irreparable damage to vision occurs.

Opthalmologists perform annual exams as well to monitor the health of your eyes and vision. They perform a dilated examination, which involves using drops to dilate your pupils. This includes tests like visual acuity and how your pupils respond to light.

They prescribe contact lenses and eyeglasses

Contact lenses and eyeglasses are used to correct refractive problems such as astigmatism, hyperopia and myopia. They focus light by refractively refracting it onto your retina.

Your eye doctor will perform an eye examination to determine the correct prescription to correct any problems with your vision. The diopter value is used to indicate the curvature of your eyes.

An ophthalmologist will update your prescription based upon the measurements taken at your appointment. You should get an update from your ophthalmologist before purchasing new glasses or contact lenses.

During an evaluation appointment, an ophthalmologist takes measurements of your eye's curvature and its width. Your contact lens prescription may include additional specifications that require measurements. These measurements help ensure a proper fitting while also identifying which lenses are best for you.

They perform eye surgery

Eye surgery is a delicate operation that requires highly-trained surgeons. Ophthalmologists are trained for 12 to 13 years before they can practice medicine and surgery. They can perform a variety of eye surgeries.

They treat diseases of the vitreous gel surrounding your eye and the retina, including wet macular and retinal detachments. They use surgical techniques to correct eye conditions such as cataracts (removal cloudy lenses), and retinal detachments.

Ophthalmologists specialize in specific areas such as pediatrics and glaucoma surgery. Subspecialists typically undergo an additional year of training after completing their residency (called fellowship).

Ophthalmologists offer a variety of laser vision correction procedures such as LASIK. This procedure alters the shape of the cornea to improve nearsightedness, farsightedness or astigmatism.

Patients are educated

Ophthalmologists provide information to their patients about the best ways to manage eye disease and treatment options. They may provide insight into why certain therapies work better than others or recommend changes to medication or lifestyle choices.

Ophthalmologists usually hold either a Doctorate of Medicine or Osteopathic Medicine. To become an ophthalmologist, one must first attend medical school and then complete a residency program which includes internships and training.

During their training, ophthalmologists become experts in all aspects of eye care. This includes studying the progression of disease, risk factors, and how the body works in order to prescribe appropriate treatment. They also undergo training in surgical procedures such as cataract and glaucoma surgeries.
